In July 2012, two years after launching their online dating site, DateMySchool, co-founders Jean Meyer and Balazs Alexa, both 2011 graduates of Columbia Business School, had recently wrapped up a successful round of Series A financing. As managers, Meyer and Alexa were hands-on and extremely operationally focused—they believed in their platform's technological superiority and managed their small team of employees as a tight-knit family.
