What opportunities should Beli, a social restaurant list-keeping and discovery platform built around personalized rankings, consider for long-term growth?
What opportunities should Beli, a social restaurant list-keeping and discovery platform built around personalized rankings, consider for long-term growth?
Eliot Frost and Judith Thelen launched Beli in June 2021 to provide people a single, simple-to-use repository for tracking restaurants they have visited and those they want to try. They avoided the “cold start problem”, common to upstart apps, by building user momentum through social media posts and invite-only access. They addressed the dearth of data problem by incentivizing user engagement. By early 2026, Beli had tens of millions of ratings. Growth was steep but concentrated in major U.S. metropolitan areas and with a user base that skewed young – under 35. Beli consider their competition to be Google Maps, Notes, Excel, Doc; tools people use to track personal restaurant preferences.
With an infusion of venture capital funding , Frost and Thelen are considering what is next for the business. In this case, students discuss the tradeoffs for a number of strategic opportunities including premium access, geographic expansion, and category expansion like hotels and entertainment venues.
