Will a new European football structure threaten the incumbent organization?
In April 2021, rumors of a new European football association – the Super League – emerged, troubling Aleksander Čeferin, president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The Super League would comprise of 12 of the world’s largest football clubs; the organization’s role would be to consolidate athletic talent and secure long-term broadcast revenues for its member clubs. With a plethora of attractive features for its members, the Super League is a major competitive threat to the UEFA, so Čeferin vowed to use every measure possible to stop the breakaway. In this case, students are introduced to organized sports and the intricacies of sports team ownership, monetization strategies, and the organizations and players that govern them. Students will be asked to assess the local and international stakeholders involved and to discuss the options faced by each party.
