By 2023, the energy transformation has reached a pivotal point: for the first time ever, the global investment in solar was expected to exceed the amount spent on drilling-based power. At the forefront, NineDot Energy was poised to participate as a young, nimble entrant. Founded by Adam Cohen, whose career focused on the soft costs of clean energy (i.e., planning, sales, deployment) and David Arfin, who had developed a bespoke business model leasing residential solar panels to customers, the company sought to provide ways for residential consumers to participate in the move toward clean energy. In this case, students will use a small-scale simulation to illustrate tradeoffs that NineDot faces as it scales its business model.
