What strategic initiatives are most important for the Lehigh Valley Health Network to achieve its financial and patient care goals?
Founded in 1899 with one hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania, by 2018 Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) had expanded to include eight hospitals and 26 health centers. Over a five year period LVHN had been implementing a population health management (PHM) strategy to transform from an organization based on the traditional fee-for-service (FFS) payment system to one paid for delivering better outcomes. While new earnings were emerging from PHM efforts, FFS activities still contributed the majority of revenues. Operating in an uncertain marketplace, as state and federal healthcare regulations were expected to be in flux for some time, LVHN was challenged to prioritize its objectives. In this case, students are asked to analyze the organization's performance data in the context of the US healthcare industry in order to determine the best path forward for LVHN.
