What challenges will a healthcare system face as they plan to roll out a program to standardize processes, thereby cutting costs and improving care?
Intermountain Healthcare Chief Quality Officer Dr. Brent James and his Quality Team had developed more than 100 standardized processes to reduce variation in medical practices. One such program— the sepsis shared baseline—led by the director of critical care units at Intermountain significantly lowered both the costs of care and the sepsis-related mortality rate at the participating hospitals. In this case, students are given the topline results of the pilot program and are asked to consider what issues were critical to its success and what challenges the team might face as they seek to replicate the program throughout the Intermountain Healthcare network.
